Bye, Bye Mould!
Bye, bye mould? Hold on, not so fast! Simply put, there is both good and bad mould. Mushrooms are good, black mould is bad! So unless you’re competing for top Chef Canada, it’s important to know the facts. The fact is that mould can produce toxins that can affect our health along with other issues like asthma, eczema, nasal allergies and even abdominal cramping.
As everyone jumps on the mould bandwagon, there’s been a lot of information or more accurately misinformation. First off, unlike our friends south of the border, its spelt MOULD. Anytime I see a company in Canada spelling it MOLD – it raises a red flag. Shouldn’t you be able to spell it correctly before talking about it intelligently? Perhaps that’s for another blog.
Mould spores are everywhere in the air, all the time. More accurately, mould spores are everywhere in the air all the time - except outside in the cold. Cold kills mould! Alas, another great reason for living in Brandon! This is why state-of-the-art equipment such as dry ice blasting is used for quick and environmentally safe removal of mould on large projects.
Mould likes the same temperatures we do i.e. the comfortable interior of our homes! Mould likes many of the materials we like to build our homes with. Wood, drywall and carpeting being a perfect target. But like any good recipe – can you tell I love food! – for mould to thrive it needs three key ingredients; air, moisture and a food source. Here’s the rub, the easiest most cost effective way to control the mould is to control the moisture. If you remove the mould, but not the moisture – its just a matter of time before mould thanks you with a return visit. Removing the mould is as simple as a bucket of Javex and a scrub brush – not so. I cringe every time I see a well intentioned homeowner scrubbing away, not realizing they are releasing mould spores into the air, cross contaminating the rest of the home – not good!
Once the moisture is gone and the mould is removed all that remains is cleaning and disinfecting. But please don’t be fooled by the calming smell of eucalyptus – a common ingredient in mould disinfectant. Smelling pretty and having the job done right don’t always go hand in hand. Bye, bye mould.
